New data center energy efficiency national standard publishe

Apr 03, 2018

Sept.20, 2016, the national standard “Data Center Resource Utilization Part 3: Electric Energy Efficiency Requirement and Measurement” was formally published.

It stipulate measurement and calculation of electric energy utilize efficiency and clearly present the requirement of it.

It divides the efficiency into five level as high energy-efficient, energy-efficient, qualified, energy-intensive, high energy-intensive.

There are standard terms in detail below.

Structure of data center energy consumption

The main source of energy consumption are IT devices, illuminating system, air-conditioning system, power supply and distribution system. They are ranked as following picture.

                                            Data Center Energy Consumption Structure

1. IT devices: Composed of servers, storage and network communication devices, it create 45% energy consumption, amount which servers hold 50%, storage hold 35% and network communication devices hold the rest.

2. Conditioning system: It consume 40% of total energy consumption, making it one of the biggest source of energy consumption. It is the most important link in reducing cost.

3. Power system: Composed of UPS input electricity supply system, which is made of input transformer and ATS switch, and UPS electricity supply system, which is made of UPS and relevant input/output powe,r distribution cabinet, it hold 10% of data center energy consumption. 7% are from UPS electricity supply system, and the others come from UPS input electricity supply system.

4. Illuminating system: It cost 3% of total energy consumption.

Data center Energy Consumption Index

1. PUE
Power Usage Effectiveness(PUE) is a widely accepted and adopted integrate index that measures data center infrastructure energy consumption. Its computational formula is:

PUE = PTotal / PIT

PTotal is total electricity consumption of data center. PIT is data center IT devices electricity consumption.

This index reflects how much electricity of total data center is used in IT equipments. The bigger it is, the more energy the data center infrastructure cost. Generally, advanced data center’s PUE is less than 1.6.

2. pPUE
Partial PUE(pPUE) is an extended concept of PUE. It measures and analyzes partial areas’ or devices’ energy efficiency. So before using it, one must divide data center into different zones. Its computational formula is:

pPUE1 = (N1+ I1) / I1

N1 + I1 is total energy consumption of zone1. I1 is IT devices consumption.

pPUE reflects energy consumption of partial areas and equipments of data center. It may be bigger or less than total PUE. To improve data center’s energy efficiency, one should first improve the part which has a high pPUE.

3. CLF/PLF
Cooling Load Factor(CLF) is defined as ratio of data center cooling device electricity consumption and IT devices. Power Load Factor(PLF) is ratio of power supply and distribution system’s and IT devices’ electricity consumption.

4.RER
Renewable Energy Ratio is used to measure usage of renewable energy, in order to promote reuse of that power.
